HISTORICAL SKETCH
The Camp Fire Girls, Inc. was founded in 1910 by a group of educators headed by Dr. Luther Halsey Gulick. It was prompted by the recognition of a widespread need for a leisure time program designed for girls with their interests in mind.  The primary purpose of the organization is to perpetuate the spiritual ideals of the home and aid in the formation of good health and character habits.

The first Camp Fire Girls group in the Fargo-Moorhead [North Dakota/Minnesota] area was started in November 1917.  The first organization was known as the Whofonodo Camp Fire Group of Fargo.  Whofonodo stands for “Wheat of North Dakota.”  It grew slowly, but soon included other communities in the Red River Valley.  The local council became known as the Red River Valley Camp Fire Council.  A second council, the Clay County Camp Fire Council, was based in Moorhead.  In 1928 the Red River Valley Camp Fire Council, based in Fargo, hired its first permanent paid executive, Mrs. R. M. Talley.  By 1930 a permanent camp was established and financed through donations.  An attempt was made in 1968 to merge the Red River Valley Camp Fire Council and the Clay County Camp Fire Council, but the Clay County Council found it financially advantageous to remain separate.  In 1978, however, the Lake Agassiz Council was formed through a merger of the two previously mentioned councils.  The present council serves twenty-seven North Dakota and ten Minnesota counties. 

COLLECITON DESCRIPTION

The Camp Fire Girls, Inc. records are a collection of historical materials dating back to 1914.  These records include information from the Clay County Council of Camp Fire Girls, Red River Valley Camp Fire Girls (local and regional), Camp Trowbridge program and the Blue Bird organization.  Materials include information on board minutes, by-laws, budgets, finances, invoices, local and national correspondence, personnel, Camp Fire programs, membership, publicity, conferences and other related items.  The scrapbooks are composed of pamphlets, program records, news clippings and pictures.  The Red River Council and Clay County records are arranged separately.
