Why Should I Consider Studying Cultural Anthropology?

The broad, holistic perspective of anthropology can actually give you an edge over people trained in other fields that look at elements of culture (e.g., economics, politics, health) separately. Flexibility is the key. Although cultural anthropologists ultimately end up pursuing particular areas of interest (e.g., kinship, subsistence, religion) we are also trained to view cultures as integrated systems and that helps tremendously in seeing possible inter-connections between different elements. Non-anthropologists have finally begun to recognize this potential. In fact, on February 18, 1999, the USA Today ran a story that extolled Anthropology degrees as hot assets in the corporate world. Katherine Burr, who holds masters degrees in both anthropology and business, is CEO of The Hanseatic Group, financial advisors. She states: "my competitive edge came completely out of anthropology... The world is so unknown, changes so rapidly. Preconceptions can kill you." Read more about anthropologists in the corporate world in "Anthropologists Go Native in the Corporate Village" and "The Anthropology of Business." Also see the 2000 CNN Money segment noting that Anthropology majors can capitalize on the growing global marketplace.
