Phyllis May-Machunda, Ph.D. Office Location: MA 279S Professor Phyllis May-Machunda studies folklore, multicultural studies and social justice. Her degrees are in Music (Voice) and Folklore & Ethnomusicology. As a humanist, her research interests include African American music and culture, children's folklore in the U.S., disability studies, multiculturalism, performance and social justice. She joined this department in 1989. In the decade prior to coming to Minnesota State University Moorhead, Prof. May-Machunda worked as a researcher and folklorist at the Smithsonian Institution and held an Arts Management Fellowship at National Endowment for the Arts. She also has been a recipient of other national fellowships, continues to actively engage in public sector humanities work and serve on the organizational boards. She is Coordinator of the African American Humanities minor, and Co-Founder and Co-Coordinator of Training Our Campuses Against Racism (TOCAR), a multi-campus, antiracism initiative in Fargo-Moorhead and deeply involved in Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity (SEED) initiatives in our community. In her teaching, Prof. May-Machunda strives to guide students to think critically about their own culture as well as those of others. She is eager to share her knowledge with students to help them enrich their educational and professional experiences. |
