The purpose of the MSUM tutoring program is to provide quality supplemental academic assistance to as many students as possible. Tutoring is not meant to be a last minute process. We encourage students to come in as soon as they realize they might be having difficulty.

We have a wide variety of tutors that represent a majority of departments on campus. It is possible that we might not have a tutor for a particular class that you are looking for. Sometimes there is not an interest in tutoring that class or a qualified tutor has not been identified. We do our best to find a tutor for you if we do not have the one that you are looking for. However, it is possible that we won't find one.

HOW DO I GET A TUTOR?

The very first thing that you need to do is come to the MSUM Academic Resource Office (ARO) in Flora Frick 151. Fill out a registration form to request a tutor for your class.

If you have any questions or concerns ask to see the Tutor Coordinator, Kathryn Estee.

With a few exceptions, all tutoring will take place in the ARO.  You are provided one hour of tutoring per week per course.  Once you are approved for tutoring, if we have a tutor available you will be asked to come in to the ARO and sign up on the tutor contact sheet.  It is recommended that you write down their contact information and notify them that you will be coming in for their time slot.

During your first session with your tutor, you will fill out a contract regarding policies and requirements.  You are expected to call ahead if you cannot make it, and to show up prepared and on time.  If you have any issues please contact the tutoring coordinator.  The tutors are also students so it is essential to plan ahead and give the tutor plenty of notice so that you are not disappointed if they can't meet with you the day you call. The Tutor Coordinator, Kathryn Estee, is the key person you will want to contact should you have any problems with the tutoring program.  You should try to keep the same time slot throughout the remainder of the semester unless you arrange otherwise.

HOW DO I BECOME A TUTOR?

Tutor selection is mostly based upon recommendations by the chair of the department. We ask the departments to recommend students that they believe have strong communication and teaching skills in addition to a strong academic record. It is required that you have been successful in the class(es) for which you wish to tutor. There are some exceptions to these requirements, but, all exceptions have to be approved by Tutoring Coordinator.

If you think you have been recommended by your department, but you're not sure, stop by the ARO and ask the Tutor Coordinator.  You can also e-mail requests/questions to the Tutor Coordinator at esteeka@mnstate.edu
