Supplemental Instruction

What is SI?

Supplemental Instruction  is a program developed by Professionals at the University of Missouri, Kansas City and provides students with the opportunity to improve their understanding of course material and to improve their grades in various science, math,  and accounting courses that are particularly challenging.

SI is for all students who want to improve their understanding of course material.  SI gives students the opportunity to meet with an SI leader and other students from the class to compare notes, discuss important concepts, develop strategies and methods for studying, and to prepare for exams. Each session is facilitated by an SI leader.

Who are the SI leaders?

SI leaders are students who have taken and done well in the course you are in.  SI leaders are trained in collaborative learning techniques, and are prepared to share their knowledge and study skills with you.  They understand the course material and are enthusiastic about helping guide you through it.

SI leaders attend the class, read the assignments and do the homework. Their job is not to re-deliver the lecture or to give more notes.  Instead they help you think about the material and find a way to put it all together.

  When is SI?

MSUM offers weekly SI sessions that begin the second week of classes, and are scheduled at times that will enable most students to participate.  The SI leader will announce their SI schedule in class.  Attendance is voluntary.  You can attend one, two, or all three sessions – it’s up to you.  Students that come to SI sessions regularly, typically earn higher grades than students that do not attend.

SI leaders will often also have special review sessions before tests.  These sessions will be announced in class.  Students who attend sessions regularly receive far greater benefits than those who only attend test review sessions.  In general, students who spend more time in SI sessions receive better grades than those who don't.

SI sessions are informal.  Bring your notes, your textbook, and your questions.
