Distinction in Engagement FAQ

Who can participate?

Any active MSUM student who is in good academic standing (is not on academic probation).

Can I use activities that are required by my major?

Students may apply a maximum of two engagement activities that are required by the major.  The two activities must be in different categories (learning, service, or citizenship).

Do I have to use one of the activities listed by my college?

Because the overall framework and goals of the program are shared among the colleges, students may substitute a suggested activity from a different college if that better meets their individual needs.  Students should consult with their advisor in determining the list of activities for the proposal form.  Students and advisors can contact Janet Haak in the ARO (haak@mnstate.edu) with any questions.

Do I complete all of the activities by myself?

One of the six activities must involve working as part of a team.

What happens if I start in this program and then change my major?

Students who change majors and move from one college to another will retain the engagement activities that have been completed, but will finish the program requirements in the college that houses the new major.

I'm a transfer student.  Can I use activities I did at the school I attended before I came to MSUM?

Transfer students may apply a maximum of two engagement activities completed at their previous institution(s), one in the category of service and one in the category of citizenship.  Students must be able to obtain signatures on the activity forms for these previously completed activities.

I'm a senior.  Do I still have time to complete this program before graduation?

Yes.  If you have completed activities that fulfill the different areas and can gather the needed signatures, you can complete this program.  Contact Janet Haak (haak@mnstate.edu) for details.

What is my advisor's role in this program?

Your advisor will help you to fill out your proposal form, and sign your papers as you complete each step.  It is NOT your advisor's job to handle your paperwork - each student is responsible for driving the process and completing all paperwork.

When should I have everything completed?

You should try to finish the six activities and turn in your Self-Reflection paper and Resume by mid-semester of your final term at MSUM.  This will give the Records Office enough time to process your paperwork and note this distinction in the Graduation program.

Why should I participate in this program?

The benefits for you are twofold.  First, the structure of this program ensures that you will have a broad range of experiences that enhance your academic program- you're doing great things!  Second, this distinction is permanently noted on your transcript, giving you the opportunity to explain what your participation in this program means as you go on to job and graduate school interviews.
