Introduce yourself to your new advisees as soon as you get your advisee list. Send them a welcome email or letter. Sample New Advisor Email Message |

Attend an Advisor Workshop. |

Start an email group list to easily contact all of your advisees. Contact the MSUM Helpdesk if you need assistance. |

If one of your advisees changes to a new advisor, forward the student's file to the new advisor. |

Start a file on each new advisee. In accordance with FERPA regulations, DO NOT place any personal information on the student in this file other than:

Expect PDF forms for your advisees to be delivered to the department near the middle of the month. (Transcripts will not longer be sent from the Records office, but you are able to access transcripts through the Faculty Override system. Click on the "employee" tab and access the "Advisee List - Enrolled" from the left-hand menu. When your list of advisees appears, click on the "Academic Record" and select the General Education format) |

As the advising weeks approach, post an advising Pre-Registration Schedule appointment sheet outside your door. |

Meet with advisees to help determine course schedules. |

Take the time to ask about future aspirations of our advisee: internships, graduate school, career options. |

Review the PDF with your advisee:

If there are corrections, return to the Records Office |

If no corrections, give to the students |

If you need to refer a student to another resource (for example, Counseling Center, or free Peer Tutoring services), use the Advisor Reference Guide to contact the appropriate resource. |
