Spanish @ MSUM

Today’s globalized world demands that we be able to interact with people from a variety of cultures.

MSUM's Languages and Cultures Department offers majors in Spanish (B.A.) and  Spanish Education (Teaching) (B.S.) and options for minors include Spanish and Spanish Education (Teaching).

Career Information
Foreign language study can lead to a variety of careers in which language is used as either a primary or a secondary skill. Foreign language education develops practical language proficiency, prepares skilled communicators, and fosters an understanding of and appreciation for other cultures and societies. Representative career paths for foreign language majors include: teaching, translating/interpreting, employment in government, educational administration, business, industry and commerce.

Study Abroad Opportunities

Students who are studying in the Department are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to Study Abroad.  We have a study abroad program Cuernavaca, Mexico where students are able to enroll in courses that will count toward their degree at MSUM as well as participate in career specific internships and cultural excursions.  Exchange programs in Spanish include the Universidad Internacional in Cuernavaca, Mexico and the Universidad de San Francisco in Quito, Ecuador.

Department Benefits

  • Faculty work closely with students bringing to bear a wealth of experience working in and traveling to Spanish speaking countries.
  • There is a Spanish Club and a chapter of the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, Sigma Delta Pi in the department that is healthily engaged in service projects in the surrounding community.
  • Students are involved in Service Learning projects with local agencies serving the Hispanic Community as well as the Spanish Immersion Program at Ellen Hopkins Elementary School.
