Pre-Wildlife Management @ MSUM

We do not offer a degree in wildlife management as such. Our prospective wildlife students take a biology degree with a concentration in pre-wildlife biology. They take field courses (plant taxonomy, animal behavior, etc.) plus an introductory wildlife ecology course (described in the college catalog). I have a very active research program in wildlife biology and my students can get hands-on experience in research projects involving bison, prairie dogs, small mammals, and/or tree squirrels. Most wildlifers these days are going on to graduate school since jobs are difficult to find without at least a master’s degree. Having a biology degree from MSUM along with research experience greatly increases your opportunities for graduate school as well as employment. Our graduates have been quite successful in wildlife graduate programs.

No matter what school you attend, the undergraduate wildlife curriculum will be about the same - various biology courses, mathematics, chemistry, physics, and a variety of other required subjects such as English and humanities. The MSUM biology degree represents a broadly based program meeting all the requirements for further training in wildlife at a larger school. There are certain advantages to taking your undergraduate work here in this Department. We have relatively small classes with an opportunity for individual attention; and, most importantly, an outstanding faculty.
