Pre-Agriculture @ MSUM
While MSUM does not offer a degree in agriculture, a variety of excellent agricultural degree programs are available to MSUM students through the Tri-College University Student Exchange Program.
In cooperation with North Dakota State University (NDSU) in Fargo, Minnesota residents enrolled at MSUM can pursue a major in a department of the College of Agriculture at NDSU. The usual pattern would be to spend three years in residence at MSUM. During this time you would satisfy your general course requirements through coursework on our campus. At the same time the more specialized courses required for your major which are not available on our campus would be taken at NDSU. Shuttle buses run throughout the day between the two campuses so that transportation is no problem. In your senior year of the program you would transfer to NDSU to complete your requirements and receive your degree. I would serve as an advisor during your residence at MSUM, but you would also maintain close contact with your department at NDSU. In fact, an advisor from each department in the College of Agriculture will handle students on the exchange program.
The majors available to you through this program are quite varied. They include Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Education, Agronomy, Animal Science, Bacteriology, Entomology, Horticulture, Mechanized Agriculture, Plant Pathology, and Soils. Within several of these, more specialized options are available such as farm and ranch operation, business, production, and research, Catalogs, available from the Registrar's Offices at NDSU and MSUM spell out in detail the nature of the many programs and course work available at both institutions.
Most of the general coursework you take at MSUM will transfer to any institution offering programs in agriculture, but the exchange program with NDSU has several advantages over the typical pre-professional two-year program. Among these is the fact that you may begin your professional work immediately rather than having to wait until the third year. Another advantage is that Minnesota residents who must attend an institution in Minnesota to qualify for certain types of financial assistance can do so by enrolling at MSUM as they pursue a degree in agriculture at NDSU.
