International Studies is a rapidly growing field of study because our world is increasingly shaped by global and regional environments – political, military, economic, religious, ethnic and cultural. Some issues of international interest might include migration patterns, the environment, population growth, economies or terrorism.
MSUM’s International Studies major develops the ability to analyze problems that cannot be examined from the perspective of a single discipline, and encourages international understanding through research and interdisciplinary study. International Studies is an excellent major to accompany a major in any other discipline.
Career OptionsThe International Studies major is excellent preparation for a variety of careers. Graduates work in government as diplomats, translators, or research analysts. The major is also excellent training for a variety of careers in business. Many graduates pursue graduate school or law school. Because success in the workplace today demands knowledge of international issues, this major provides a solid background for many different positions and aspirations.
Study Abroad OpportunitiesThe International experience must consist of at least one semester of international study or internship as approved by the program committee. It will include the completion of Intl 400 upon return. Students must have junior standing or higher at time of experience. Courses taken may be applied to the upper level emphasis. While Eurospring is an enriching experience for students, it would not be applicable to this requirement.
Study abroad is an experience that helps students acquire an understanding of the culture and the geographical area of the country in which they study. This will be accomplished by requiring the student to prepare a paper on his/her cultural experience during the study abroad. Content of this paper will include the student’s analysis of how the culture and history of the country has impacted or shaped his/her attitudes. Upon completion of the paper, the student registers for Intl 400 and will receive one semester credit if the length of the study abroad is one semester and two semester credits if the length of the study abroad is two semesters.
