East Asian Studies @ MSUM
The Languages and Cultures Department teaches courses in Chinese, Japanese, French & Spanish. We offer six degree options. Majors are offered in East Asian Studies (B.S.), Spanish (B.A.) and Spanish Education (Teaching) (B.S.) and options for minors include East Asian Studies, Spanish and Spanish Education (Teaching).
Career Information
Foreign language study can lead to a variety of careers in which language is used as either a primary or a secondary skill. Foreign language education develops practical language proficiency, prepares skilled communicators, and fosters an understanding of and appreciation for other cultures and societies. Representative career paths for foreign language majors include: teaching, translating/interpreting, employment in government, educational administration, business, industry and commerce.
Department Benefits
Our department includes a student Language Lab where students can use computers to work on assignments and check-out language related software. These machines are equipped with special software or settings to assist students with working in the language they are studying.
Students who are studying in the Department are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to Study Abroad. We have exchange programs and connections with other study abroad programs in China, Japan and Mexico. Exchange programs in East Asian Studies include Nankai University in China and Kanda and Nagoya Universities in Japan.
