Major Search Engines to Access Public and Private Grant Sources

Below are links to search engines which may help in your search for funds.

Subscription Sites:

  • Council on Undergraduate Research: The mission of the Council on Undergraduate Research is to support and promote undergraduate student-faculty collaborative research and scholarship. The site provides information for NON Members including CUR programs and seminars and CUR publications. More detailed information on funding opportunities for student-faculty collaborations can only be accessed by member institutions. MSUM is a member and by contacting Dr. Judith Strong (477-2075), or Dean Ron Jeppson (477-5892) you can obtain access.

  • GrantMiner: Considered one of the most complete grant information services on the Web, this site can be accessed through MnSCU -- just follow the directions.

  • Minnesota Council of Foundations: When seeking funds through a private source, the best first step is to explore the opportunities offered by local or regional foundations. This site provides information on the hundreds of foundations providing funds to organizations in Minnesota. Links to each foundation provides information in areas fundable, eligible organizations and the specific geographic area served (ex. Some foundations restrict funding to one city or county). The site also presents the Common Grant Application required by many Minnesota foundations. Information on grant deadlines and upcoming seminars is also available.

In addition to accessing potential public and private sources found on other pages of Funding Opportunities, applicants may also find the following search engines useful.

Free Sites:

  • Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance: The CFDA provides a short summary of each grant program, as well as contact information for Federal agencies that award grants.

  • The Chronicle of Philanthropy Deadlines: Excellent site that allows a search by topical areas. Available grants in each area are presented by their deadline for submission.

  • e-Grants: This site is a portal for U.S. Department of Education discretionary grants and cooperative agreements. A very comprehensive primer on grants is available by going to LINKS and typing "What Should I Know about Education Grants." In addition, details on how to apply and administer grants and a useful glossary is provided.

  • grants.gov: A must look! In addition to LINKS for 26 federal agencies, access is available to a number of sites including the Foundation Directory (Private Foundations) and The National Science Foundation. A site for Student financial support is also available. A six-step approach for the use of the site is very useful; particularly for individuals new to the grant "game." The site map is a good starting point for this site.

  • Fundsnet Online Services: A must look! This site provides access to thousands of Foundations. Searches can be alphabetically or by general topic. The Site Map is a good beginning point.

  • GrantsNet: Excellent site for the biomedical sciences both for student and faculty opportunities. Site requires a membership that is free and accomplished online. In addition to grant searches, the site provides current news on funding and tips for grant writers.

  • Philanthropy News Digest-RFP Bulletin: Published by the Foundation Center the digest's RFP Bulletin section is a great site that lists current available grants by category.
