Budget Preparation
Believe it or not, more grants are denied for having too small a budget than one too large. Too small indicates to review groups that you may not fully understand all that is involved in the project. A variety of University offices are available to provide support as the budget is prepared.
Budget Detail: Information provided by the granting agency should be read carefully for the following:
Is MSUM eligible for funding under the program?
Are there items not fundable under the specific program (i.e. equipment)?
Are match funds required?
Dean or Director: It is imperative that any individual who wishes to submit a grant through MSUM meet with the Dean or Director in which the grant project will be housed. Specific items to be discussed and resolved include:
Whether any match required will be made available.
Whether any release time requested is authorized. This latter item includes the approval for the hiring of adjunct/overload faculty to replace the time released.
Availability of space and other items that may impact the college or division. If present space is to be remodeled or new space added, a cost estimate from the Physical Plant Manager should be presented to the Dean or Director to ascertain the likelihood for any remodeling or expansion and the Form for Resources for Grants/Contracts should be submitted with the Approval Form for Contracts, Grants and Contributions available from Academic Affairs.
