ChargeRevising a university liberal studies or general education program is as challenging a task as it is an important one. The results of this work will affect every student taught at Minnesota State University Moorhead, and many of the faculty members and departments on campus. Shortly after the current liberal studies program was adopted, faculty from MSUM joined colleagues across the state to create the 10 categories and learning competencies in the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum. The MSUM Liberal Studies Task Force (LSFT) is charged to determine what else the university values and expects students to master, both within the liberal studies program, and at the upper level, and create appropriate categories to augment the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum or to require at the upper level of all students. The LSTF should recommend revisions of the liberal studies requirement; structure, course offerings, and draft broad, measurable student competencies in each of the categories created and identify the expertise needed to develop an effective, realistic plan to assess student mastery. The LSTF should also provide guidance to faculty members who develop courses for consideration as part of the new requirement.
