Distinction in Engagement Activity Requirements
Category 1: Engagement in learning within the major
Learning Outcome
- Students will develop a greater depth of knowledge in their discipline by applying concepts, theories, or skills through research or creative activity or by learning new knowledge or skills that advance their learning beyond the curricular or course requirements.
Activities (choose 1 from the list below)

Students will participate for at least 20 hours in a research or creative activity with a faculty member and will present the results of this project to an audience.

Students will attend a minimum of 20 hours of non-classroom lectures, workshops, or training sessions in their discipline.
Category 2: Engagement in learning beyond the major
Learning Outcome
- Students will develop a breadth of knowledge in a focused area of study.
Activities (choose 1 from the list below)

Students may complete a second major, minor or certificate approved by the university.

Students may complete a minimum of 18 credits in a series of related courses from discipline(s) other than their own. Study abroad coursework may be included.
Category 3: Engagement in service within the university
Learning Outcome
- Students will develop a sense of ownership for the activities of Minnesota State University Moorhead by providing service to the institution.
Activities
- Students will serve in a leadership role on campus. Some of the potential options include Student Senate, student organization officer, Admissions Office A-Team, SOC (Student Orientation Counselor), Residence Hall Association, Residence Hall Council, Dragon Ambassador, Peer Advisor, member on a University Committee or College Advisory Board. This activity will involve working with a team or group.
Category 4: Engagement in service beyond the university
Learning Outcome
- Students will develop the ability to apply their knowledge in situations that educate or serve the broader community.
Activities (choose 1 from the list below)
- Develop and participate in an outreach activity on behalf of the College of Social and Natural Sciences. These outreach activities—coordinated by the staff or faculty of the university—may be conducted for a wide variety of audiences, ranging from community members to K-12 students.
Category 5: Engagement in citizenship within the region
Learning Outcome
- Students will develop the initiative to improve their community through involvement with campus or community organizations.
Activities (choose 1 from the list below)

Students will, through their own motivation, participate for 20 hours in the Tri-State activities of a social service organization, community organization, political organization, military service organization, or religious organization. A list of contact information for some of these organizations will be made available to students.

Students will play an active role in TOCAR (Training Our Campuses Against Racism) on campus.
Category 6: Engagement in citizenship beyond the region
Learning Outcome
- Students will gain an appreciation of the human struggles that characterize the nation and world today by involving themselves in national or global issues.
Activities (choose 1 from the list below)

Students will, through their own motivation, participate for 20 hours in the national or international activities of a social service organization, community organization, political organization, military service organization, or religious organization. A list of contact information for some of these organizations will be made available to students.

Students will serve for 20 hours as a mentor to an international student on the MSUM campus.
