Which English Course?

ENGL 101: English Composition I (3)
This course fulfills Dragon Core Competency 1B and is Writing-Intensive.

ENGL 102: Composition and Literature II (4)
Under Liberal Studies requirements this course is the second course in a two-course sequence. While ENGL 202 was approved as the replacement for this course (see APAC minutes 4-17-07) ENGL 102 must continue to be offered for those students in the Liberal Studies program until the end of Summer 2009, the sunset date for the Liberal Studies Program.

ENGL 104: Freshmen Composition and Literature (1-2)
As stated in the course description, this course is designed for transfer students, or for returning MSUM students who, because of curricular conversion, (quarter credits to semester credits) do not have sufficient credits to fulfill the English requirements. Permission of the English Department chairperson or Freshman Composition coordinator is required prior to enrollment in this course.

ENGL 201: English Composition II (3)
This course is provided for two categories of students and is Writing-Intensive

  1. Those students who come to MSUM with extensive writing experience and who would be best served by a course that is more rigorous than ENGL 101. Therefore, it can be used as a substitute for ENGL 101 to fulfill Dragon Core Competency Area 1B (see Dragon Core Written Communication Options), and

  2. Those students who complete ENGL 101 but who believe they need additional writing instruction before participating in more advanced Writing-intensive courses. For these students it can also be used to meet Dragon Core Competency Area 6 requirements.

ENGL 202: English Composition and Literature (3)
This course was created to replace the content of ENGL 102, credits were reduced (4 to 3), and course level was increased. It was approved for Dragon Core Competency Area 6 and as a Writing-Intensive course (see APAC minutes 4-17-07). This course is intended to be useful for English majors who wish to take a writing-intensive elective course and for some education majors, particularly those in areas where literary analysis is required. In fact, ENGL 202 was added to the requirements for Elementary and Early Childhood Education and Special Education effective Fall 2007 (see APAC minutes 4-17-07).

Based on the above:

  • Students under Dragon Core requirements should take ENGL 101 or ENGL 201 to fulfill Dragon Core Competency Area 1B (see Written Communication Options Sheet) or after completing ENGL 101, students may take ENGL 201 as a Dragon Core Competency Area 6 and Writing-Intensive course.

  • Students needing to complete Liberal Studies requirements should enroll in ENGL 102. While this course cannot be used to fulfill any Dragon Core requirements, it can be taken by any student;

  • ENGL 104 is used for transfer students who need additional credits to fulfill requirements and permission is requirement for enrollment;

  • Any student may take ENGL 202. It is a Dragon Core Competency Area 6 and Writing-Intensive course, as well as a Liberal Studies Division A course. It is a required course for Elementary and Early Childhood Education and Special Education majors effective Fall 2007 (see APAC minutes 4-17-07).
