Dragon Core Assessment Committee

December 6, 2006

8:00 a.m.
Livingston Lord Library 120D

Present: Jean Sando, chair; Ellen Brisch, Tim Decker, Ellen Hill Rajiv Kalra, Mike McCord,
Brian Smith, Stacy Voeller

Absent: Margaret Sankey

Announcements: McCord and Kalra have indicated they wish to attend the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) Assessment Workshop scheduled for March 22-23, 2007 in Lisle, IL. If any other members of the DCAC wish to attend, they are to let Sando know.

The Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) is holding a General Education and Assessment workshop in Miami, FL, March 1-3, 2007. Committee members are to let Sando know if they wish to attend. Discussion of the listed presentations and speakers ensued.

The meeting with the Faculty Association (FA) Executive Council and DCAC will be held in early January. Cindy Phillips, FA president, will schedule the meeting.

Minutes: Brisch moved. Kalra seconded to approve the minutes of November 29, 2006. The motion was approved unanimously.

Math Update: Hill reported that the core course faculty have met. Eight of the 15 sections will have artifacts from a project to submit. Kristine Montis agreed to collect the projects from all the students and the department secretary would make the copies of the tests for the DCAC. Five common questions developed for the test, cover all the student learning outcomes of the course.

CMST Assessment Update: Video taping continues through this week. Approximately 100 presentations should be collected during fall semester and it is expected more will be taped in spring semester. All the tapes will be use during the summer artifact review by the work group, funded by an IPESL award.

IPESL Update: Voeller reported that award letters have been mailed. The facilitators of the DCAC projects are responsible for obtaining signatures of their respective work group members. All project agreements are due to Academic Affairs Office by December 15, 2006.

Work Group Formation: Sando will explain how the DCAC workgroups will be populated at the December 7, 2007, FA meet and confer session. The work groups for Mathematics-DC 3, Oral Communication-DC 1A, and Written Communication-DC 1B will include one faculty member from the Corrick Center and one faculty member from either the College of Business and Industry or the College of Education and Human Services. Since Decker will be facilitating the Oral Communication work group he will also serve as the Corrick Center member. For the Critical and Multicultural Thinking (CMT) work group the chairpersons of departments offering a CMT course will be asked to recommend a volunteer. If more than five faculty are recommended, each faculty will be asked to provide a written statement as to why they should be on the work group. It was further noted that the Oral Communication workgroup may not need all its days due to the small amount of artifacts available. Facilitators need to determine a day in spring semester to meet, possibility a Saturday, for orientation with Sando. The work groups need to stagger starting dates so Sando can meet with each group on the first work day, as well. It was suggested that facilitators select dates in-advance then populate their respective groups based on availability of faculty.

Dragon Core Area 3-7 Artifact Workgroups –August: Two three-hour blocks of time on two days during August 20-24, 2007, will be scheduled to determine methods for artifact collection from DC 3-7. A process similar to the IPESL workgroup selection will be used to populate these work groups during spring semester. DCAC needs to determine a charge for each group will assist facilitate these groups. Need to develop a plan/charge for the groups.

Next Meeting: January 10, 2007, at 8:00 a.m. in LI 120D.

The meeting adjourned at 8:45 a.m.
