Dragon Core Assessment Committee

September 20, 2006

8:00 a.m.
Livingston Lord Library 120D

Present: Jean Sando, chair; Ellen Brisch, Tim Decker, Ellen Hill, Rajiv Kalra, Mike McCord, Margaret Sankey, Brian Smith, Stacy Voeller

Minutes: Approval of the September 13, 2006 minutes was tabled to the next meeting.

Critical and Multicultural Thinking (CMT) Course Testing: Sando reported that testing has ended. The return rate was greater from sections that administered a take home test than those using the open lab format. Therefore, testing during Spring 2007 will be done using the take home test. Members were encouraged to attend the meeting for faculty teaching or planning to teach a CMT course at 4:00 p.m. in MA 267.

Dragon Core Assessment Procedures: Sando distributed a revised draft of procedures noting it has significantly changed from the version reviewed last week. The draft was discussed and some minor wording changes were suggested. Members were asked to provide any additional comments by Friday, September 22, 2006, so the document can be revised and distributed for final review at next week’s meeting.

National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE): Discussion ensued on the NSSE results reviewed by members during the past week. It was suggested that an executive summary addressing the results should be written for distribution to the campus community and an open forum/roundtable be held as well.

Dragon Core Assessment Plan: The pilot assessment measures for the Foundation Four courses were reviewed. A meeting with the mathematics department and Dean Jeppson is being scheduled to discuss assessment of MATH 102. Discussion on how to assess Middle and Outer Cluster competency area student learning outcomes due to the variety of courses, disciplines, and course levels ensued. Discussion will continue the remainder of the semester.

Next Meeting: 8:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 27, 2007, in LI 120D.

The meeting adjourned at 8:50 a.m.
