  • Moved by Hill, seconded by Kalra to approve the minutes of September 6, 2006. The motion passed unanimously.

Announcements:

  • National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) results are posted on the Institutional Research website. The committee was encouraged to review the data.
  • A meeting of Critical and Multicultural Thinking (CMT) course instructors or those wishing to teach a CMT course will be held on September 20, 2006, at 4:00 p.m. in MacLean 267.
  • Committee meetings for Spring 2007 are scheduled for 8:00 a.m. on Wednesdays in LI 120D.

CMT Skills Test Update: Sando reported that almost 300 students have tested thus far, including students from three of the economics sections. An additional test time, 10:00-12:00 p.m. on September 14, 2006 has been added. Class sections that received a handout of the test for completion and return at a later date had a better return rate than sections where students came in to take the test. Therefore, it might be best if the test were administered as a “take-home” test in the future.

Dragon Core Assessment Policy: The second draft policy as revised from last week’s comments and e-mailed to the committee was reviewed. The second draft parallels the formatting of the Student Learning Outcomes Assessment Committee policy. It was noted since the Dragon Core Assessment Committee was formed mid-term, membership will be until December 2008. Discussion ensued on concerns being expressed by faculty regarding assessment and ways to promote a positive assessment culture on campus. It was noted that an assessment cycle for Dragon Core will also need to be determined. Sando agreed to incorporate discussed revisions and e-mail a third draft to the committee for review at next week’s meeting.

Dragon Core Proposal Forms: Dragon Core proposal forms were distributed for informational use only. Until the policy is formally approved any wording regarding participation in assessment cannot be listed on Dragon Core proposal forms. It was suggested the Dragon Core/Liberal Studies Committee consider adding wording consistent with the Syllabus Policy, Item 6. Course Objectives/Student Learning Outcomes be listed on the syllabus for Foundation Four proposals. It was questioned whether approval of Dragon Core courses could be temporary until a formal assessment policy is approved.

The meeting adjourned at 8:48 a.m.
