Minutes
Dragon Core Assessment Committee

February 28, 2007

8:00 a.m.
Livingston Lord Library 120D

Present: Jean Sando, chair; Ellen Brisch, Tim Decker, Ellen Hill, Rajiv Kalra, Mike McCord

Absent: Margaret Sankey, Brian Smith, Stacy Voeller (sabbatical)

Minutes: Hill moved. Kalra seconded to approve the minutes of February 14, 2007. The motion was approved unanimously.

Announcement: DCAC is scheduled to meet with the NCA evaluators at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 6, 2007, in HA 107, so the regular meeting on Wednesday, March 7, 2007, is cancelled.

Mock Visit: Sando reviewed comments received during the NCA Mock Visit held on Friday, February 23. She and Tim Borchers, chair of the Student Learning Outcomes Assessment Committee (SLOAC), are meeting to develop answers to some of the questions posed by the Mock Visit team.

Foundation Four – Progress Document: Sando distributed two documents for review and discussion. It was noted the retention rate from freshman to sophomore at MSUM is 67 percent.

Growing concern regarding the use of graduate students and adjuncts to teach ENGL 101 was discussed. The use of adjuncts and graduate students to teach lower level courses is a national trend and it was further noted that the English department has lost five faculty lines in the past few years. It was suggested that data for AP and PSEO students in relation to written communication skills be assessed as part of the placement data currently being reviewed.

Critical Multicultural Thinking: Discussion ensued on the number of seats available for Fall 2007. Sando announced that the Philosophy department is adding a course. Until the Liberal Studies program is phased out there will still be dual LS/DC designation for courses so a number of upper level students will be enrolled in CMT courses. Sando agreed to track enrollments during spring registration.

Mathematics Courses: There is a possibility that two additional sections of MATH 102 will be needed and will be added as the sections fill.

Assessment Plan: The DCAC policy is on the APAC agenda next Tuesday, March 6, 2007. Members were encouraged to attend the meeting.

Next Meeting: Wednesday, March 21, 2007, at 8:00 a.m. in LI 120D.
