Minutes
Dragon Core Assessment Committee

February 7, 2007

8:00 a.m.
Livingston Lord Library 120D

Present: Jean Sando, chair; Ellen Brisch, Tim Decker, Rajiv Kalra, Ellen Hill, Mike McCord, Brian Smith

Absent: Margaret Sankey, Stacy Voeller (sabbatical)

Guest: Deb White

Minutes:  Hill moved. Smith seconded to approve the minutes of January 31, 2007. The motion was approved unanimously.

Fall Meeting Time: Sando announced that meeting on Mondays at 3:00 p.m. during fall semester appeared to be open for members. The Corrick Center is scheduled to meet then, but not every Monday. McCord noted that his fall schedule is changing and he does not know his availability at this time.

NCA Visit: Deb White, co-chair of the NCA Steering Committee, presented an overview of the Self-Study Report and distributed a brochure that responds to frequently asked questions and highlighted some of the topics addressed in the Self-Study Report. The visit is scheduled for March 5-7, 2007. White noted while the visit schedule is set at the direction of the chair of the site evaluation team, the Dragon Core Assessment Committee will probably be one of the committees that the team will want to meet. Members were asked to keep their schedules as open as possible on March 5 and 6, 2007. A mock visit with St. Cloud State University will be held on February 21, 2007. The mock visit team will meet with DCAC. Members were encouraged to talk with students about the visit and to alleviate any anxiety that MSUM will not be reaccreditated. Members were asked to reflect on the MSUM mission.

Sando noted that preliminary Dragon Core data will be available in the Resource Room for review by the evaluating team.

Policy/Procedure Draft: The most recent version was distributed for review and discussion. Issues raised at a meeting held last week with the Faculty Association Executive Council and some members of the DCAC were discussed, including confidentiality of the data and use of individual data by faculty in their PDP. Discussion ensued on the responsibility of the DCAC to write the policy and procedures for assessment of the Dragon Core. Members were again reminded that assessment of Dragon Core Competency Areas is to be viewed as a pilot for at least one cycle.

Concerns with the self-placement process used in English and the possibility of the Corrick Center providing developmental courses to the general campus were discussed.

Next Meeting: February 14, 2007, at 8:00 a.m., in LI 120D.

The meeting adjourned at 8:55 a.m.
