Minutes
Dragon Core Assessment Committee

January 24, 2007

8:00 a.m.
Livingston Lord Library 120D

Present: Jean Sando, chair; Tim Decker, Ellen Hill, Brian Smith, Stacy Voeller

Absent: Ellen Brisch, Rajiv Kalra, Mike McCord, Margaret Sankey

Minutes: Hill moved. Smith seconded to approve the minutes of January 17, 2007. The motion was approved unanimously.

Committee Charge: The discussion regarding the Dragon Core Assessment Committee’s charge was reviewed for those members not in attendance at last week’s meeting. The idea of scheduling a specific day for assessment, which is the procedure used at Winona State University and Marshall University, has been proposed. It was suggested that participation data from Winona State be reviewed prior to further discussion.

Policy/Procedures Draft: The revised draft was reviewed and discussed. It was suggested to clarify Item #6 by inserting “Institutional Research” prior to Fact Book. Item #7 was revised to read:

The purpose is to assess program-level Student learning Outcomes for the Dragon Core and report data and recommendations to the Dragon Core Committee who is charged with overseeing the Dragon Core curriculum. The purpose of the DCAC is neither to assess faculty nor to collect data on any specific course. Data collected through this process is intended to provide a basis for analysis of the effectiveness of the Dragon Core and not individual faculty members. To this end, the administration shall not require faculty to use Dragon Core Assessment Data through the PDP process or otherwise.

Sando agreed to revise and electronically distribute the draft document for further discussion. Members were encouraged to discuss the document via email. A vote on the document will be taken at the January 31, 2007, meeting so it can be submitted for placement on the next APAC agenda.

Meeting Schedule for Fall 2007: Alternate meetings times were discussed and 11:30 a.m. on Wednesdays was suggested. Members were reminded to submit their fall 2007 schedules to Sando.

Information Literacy Audit/Curriculum Mapping: Sando met with the Library committee preparing a DC 11 rubric. DC 11 student competencies are currently embedded in four Dragon Core courses. Discussion ensued on surveying faculty on whether they are addressing any of the DC 11 student competencies in their courses then to map which student competencies are being addressed. The information would be provided to the Dragon Core Committee.

Next Meeting: Wednesday, January 31, 2007, at 8:00 a.m. in LI 120D.

The meeting adjourned at 8:49 a.m.
