Written Communication Options

The following are approved options to satisfy Competency Area 1B – Written Communication.

Option 1 –Standard: Students take ENGL 101, the DRAGON CORE Foundation Course.
Option 2: Students whose first language is other than English may substitute ENGL 111 for ENG: 101.
Option 3: Students enrolled in the Corrick Center may substitute CCGE 111 for ENGL 101.
Option 4: Students with advanced proficiency (see Course Placement Testing Policy) may substitute ENGL 201 for ENGL 101.

Placement Guidelines: To support student success ad to meet the requirements of MnSCU Board Policy 3.3.1, Minnesota State University Moorhead has developed a Course Placement Testing Policy for assessing new entering students' skills.

AP Exam Placement: AP credit is awarded as follows:

  • For a score of 3, 4 or 5 on the Literature and Composition or Language and Composition, you receive credit for ENGL 101 (3-credits), satisfy DRAGON CORE Competency Area 1B – Written Communication and you may then enroll in ENGL 201. Completion of ENGL 201 will also count as one of the courses needed to satisfy Writing-Intensive requirements.
