DRAFT Student Affairs Division Mission Statement (FY99) Student Affairs, as an integral partner in the educational enterprise, facilitates academic success and personal development by promoting leadership, service and programs for students and the University community. DIVISIONAL GOALS AND OBJECTIVES Promote student learning, success and achievement through educational and extracurricular programming. Facilitate students’ emotional, intellectual, vocational, physical and spiritual development. Serve as an advocate for students’ interests and needs. Provide effective student support services. Recruit students and facilitate and lead retention efforts. Provide and model creative leadership through programming, University involvement and problem solving. DRAFT Comstock Memorial Union UNIVERSITY GOAL 1: IMPROVE COMMUNICATION Student Affairs Goal: Advocate students’ interests and needs Subgoal 1: Work with the main office graduate intern to develop a brochure, which markets the CMU. Subgoal 2: Train and advise the Comstock Union Committee so the members can effectively make decisions, recommend policies, and problem solve issues in the best interest of the clientele utilizing the building. UNIVERSITY GOAL 2: INCREASE COLLABORATION Student Affairs Goal: Recruit students and champion retention efforts. ** Subgoal 1: To plan and implement a Fall Campus/Community event similar to the 4th of July celebration to create a shared experience for MSU and the community. Student Affairs Goal: Promote student learning, success and achievement through educational and extracurricular programming. ** Subgoal 1: To research and recommend the possibility of implementing a Co-Curricular transcript program. Subgoal 2: To continue the CMU student employment-training program, which provides initial and ongoing training for all student employees. In addition to the training provide ongoing feedback as well as two formal evaluations during the academic year. Subgoal 3: For the Campus Activities Board to be the outstanding delegation at the National Association for Campus Activities regional conference. UNIVERSITY GOAL 3: BE MORE RESPONSIVE TO OUR ENVIRONMENT Student Affairs Goal: Enhance students’ emotional, intellectual, vocational, physical and spiritual development. ** Subgoal 1: To research, recommend, and implement an effective non-alcoholic program designed to attract students to the CMU on Friday and Saturday nights as an alternative to the "bar scene" or going home for the weekend. The current Underground bar is not meeting the needs of students. Subgoal 2: To continue the learning process with our new food service vendor and recommend improvements in the retail food area. Student Affairs Goal: Provide and Model creative leadership through programming, University involvement and problem solving. Subgoal 1: To evaluate recent program and staffing changes in the Campus Activities Board to insure that their mission of providing leadership opportunities, student development and innovative programming is being met. Subgoal 2: To re-design The Center for Leadership and Organizations in order to provide students and organizations with the tools to realize their goals and enhance their education. Below are six areas that will be the focus for this goal: *Develop a representative council for student organizations *Modify the physical layout of The Center *Establish a resource library for Student Organizations *Revise the process for becoming and staying a recognized Student Organization. *Continue collaboration with the CMU on the Student Leadership Sessions ***Research the idea of creating additional leadership programs such as a Senior Year Experience/leadership course. Subgoal 3: To provide staff development for the professional staff to increase our effectiveness working with students. In addition, encourage and support staff to attend conferences and seminars for their professional growth. Student Affairs Goal: Provide quality and responsive student services. Subgoal 1: To research, evaluate, recommend, and implement additional revenue-generating services that would be used and valued by the MSU campus community. The additional operations would utilize student union space that is currently vacant. Subgoal 2: Update Comstock Memorial Union’s directional signage, office window lettering, and entrance maps. Subgoal 3: To review, clean out and re-label the CMU file cabinets Subgoal 4: To implement the Room Viewer TimeSaver Software program for diagramming events held in the CMU multipurpose rooms, in order for the customers and staff to visible see the setups requested. Subgoal 5: To continue to learn about the EMS scheduling program, and train all staff using the programming in order to provide better service to the clientele of the building. ** Subgoal 6: Research the feasibility of a professional Technology coordinator position for the CMU in conjunction with other departments. Subgoal 7: To coordinate the search process to fill the Assistant Director for Activities and Organizations position. Subgoal 8: To recruit, select and train new service area managers for Copies Plus, Etcetera Shop and the Recreation and Outing Center so the positions are filled and the new students are prepared for their position responsibilities. Subgoal 9: To research and bid an ATM machine and banking services. Student Affairs Goal: Operate programs and facilities with fiscal integrity. Subgoal 1: To coordinate installation of computers in CMU service areas for use in billing customers with charges and in printing daily cash reports. Subgoal 2: To computerize the CMU service area cash report process. Subgoal 3: To develop visual aids and handouts for student managers so they can train the 60 student employees in cash register training sessions. Subgoal 4: To select and install new cash registers in all of the CMU service areas and follow-up with employee training. Subgoal 5: To create a comprehensive external fund-raising/friend raising plan for the CMU that involves student and staff participation. The plan would be developed in consultation with the Foundation Office. Subgoal 6: To meet with the maintenance staff on a regular basis to insure the physical plant of the CMU is being maintained and communicate about projects and building needs. Subgoal 7: To continue to work on the HVAC project. Work with the engineers and contractors on the ballroom phase for a new air handler unit, cooling tower and transformer panel. MSU Counseling and Career Services Goals UNIVERSITY GOAL 1: IMPROVE COMMUNICATION Student Affairs Goal: Advocate students' interests and needs Subgoal 1: Provide withdrawal counseling to give students referrals to resources and also to encourage return to the institution whenever appropriate. Department Newsletter) UNIVERSITY GOAL 2: INCREASE COLLABORATION STRATEGIC INITIATIVE SUGGESTIONS ** Recognizing a shared concern and responsibility for the young people of our campus and surrounding community: Hendrix Health Center proposes a collaborative assessment and programming effort with Moorhead High School to address the negative impact of substance use/abuse on retention and program completion. Delivery of programming shall use a Peer Educator model, calling upon student leaders with a variety of interests and strengths. This opportunity will meet the criteria for a Service Learning Project. Student Affairs Goal: Recruit students and champion retention efforts. Subgoal 1: HHC will promote a positive view of campus through all service delivery opportunities. ** Subgoal 2: HHC will increase the focus of programming and assessment efforts to decrease the negative impact of substance use/abuse on retention and program completion. (Strategic Initiative) - Include surrounding community on shared concerns on health issues as part of the community service mission of the University. (address the negative impact of substance use/abuse on the campus and community environment) Subgoal 3: HHC will promote campus health and wellness through participation in the Admission and Orientation programs. Subgoal 4: HHC will build connections to the University through involvement in Health Promotion Internships, student work positions, supervised practicums and mentoring. Subgoal 1: HHC will focus programming and assessment strategies on expanding public health principles; population based health promotion, prevention, needs assessment and outcomes. Subgoal 2: HHC provides integrated, student-oriented assessments and interventions that work for students, in their context. HHC will focus on the highest priority health issues for the student population. (Rather than fitting students into structures designed for other populations.) UNIVERSITY GOAL 3: BE MORE RESPONSIVE TO OUR ENVIRONMENT STRATEGIC INITIATIVE SUGGESTIONS: ** Hendrix Health Center , in collaboration with the University of Minnesota Student Health Service, plans to conduct a comprehensive survey of the student body to determine: the health status and health needs of the campus population, and, what health concerns interfere most with their ability to succeed academically. It is the goal of the U of M, in concert with the MNSCU institutions to utilize a tool that would allow us to generalize data to any segment of Minnesota’s college population. The collaboration with the U. will give smaller institutions the opportunity to design structures that truly fit the student population. ** Hendrix Health Center, in collaboration with Housing and Residence Life proposes: a feasibility study to determine the need for, and extent to which a "Wellness Center" concept could be developed and housed in the Murray Commons building. The vision for this center would include existing University services and the following possibilities: Fitness Center, Sports Medicine Department, internship opportunities for Athletic Training and Corporate Fitness Majors (and others), prevention and rehabilitation programs related to Workers Compensation, Dental and Vision services, Complementary and Alternative Care services. It is intended that this facility would be dedicated to the health and wellness of the entire campus community - students, faculty and staff. Student Affairs Goal: Enhance students’ emotional, intellectual, vocational, physical and spiritual development. Subgoal 1: HHC will provide quality, accessible, responsive and cost-effective primary health care: Maintain national accreditation through AAAHC Continue to develop and assess the "Put Prevention into Practice" risk assessment intervention. Identify students without adequate access to healthcare and improve their options, so that their academic career is not impacted by costs or lack of access. Student Affairs Goal: Provide and Model creative leadership through programming, University involvement and problem solving. ** Subgoal 1: HHC will integrate health and social responsibility: Collaborate with all departments who share a concern about the negative impact of substance abuse issues on campus life and learning. (Strategic Initiative) Student Affairs Goal: Provide quality and responsive student services. ** Subgoal 1: HHC proposes to continue commitment to quality improvement assessment programs, and conduct a broad survey of the student body to determine: what services students would choose to access the HC to receive, and what health concerns interfered most with their ability to succeed academically. Subgoal 1: HHC will continue to increase self-generated revenue; and to determine the most efficient combination of student fees and revenue applied to responsive healthcare delivery. Subgoal 3: HHC will continue to follow the movement of University Health Services toward resource development in the areas of third-party billing and fee-for-service charges. (This funding mix is currently being debated to insure preservation of the founding philosophy of student health care.) Housing and Residential Life UNIVERSITY GOAL #1: IMPROVE COMMUNICATION. Student Affairs Goal: Advocate students’ interests and needs. RL Goal : Learn more about our residents’ interests and needs faster so that networking and programming happens more easily. RL Goal : Support and encourage continuing development of Hall Councils and RHA to strengthen their abilities to represent resident needs and interests. Subgoal 3: Develop a reference guide for academic advisors that will assist them in advising international students and study abroad issues. Subgoal 4: Cross-train both student and professional staff. Subgoal 5: Develop office policy and procedures to efficiently handle student requests. Subgoal 6: Develop an annual Eurospring newsletter and reunion. Subgoal 7: Introduce a data-tracking system for keeping better statistics on study abroad for institutional and national uses. UNIVERSITY GOAL 2: INCREASE COLLABORATION Student Affairs Goal: Recruit students and champion retention efforts ** Subgoal 1: International Programs will increase recruitment efforts of international students by: improving the web page to include request for information form, create a videotape for overseas advising centers, develop liaisons with Berlitz and ELS (intensive language programs), explore scholarship possibilities, create an International Alumni Network, and provide materials to Admissions office for recruitment of high school students. Subgoal 2: Survey students on programs and services to determine areas of improvement. Subgoal 1.: International Programs will coordinate the annual Celebration of Nations. Subgoal 2: Implement study abroad procedures for short-term study tours, and develop a proposal for a faculty development program. Subgoal 3: Sponsor speakers/visiting lectures on international themes. Subgoal 4: Help facilitate a proposal for a two-credit, half-semester interdisciplinary course on an international theme. Subgoal 5: Provide the Housing, Admissions, Orientation and Business office with updates lists of admitted international students to ensure that they are ready to assist these students. Subgoal 6: Maintain paperwork and accounting and provide support for summer study tours. Subgoal 7: Call together a faculty advisory committee to interview on-campus students applying for off-campus programs. Subgoal 8: Redesign the Diplomat Program to be an on-going peer guided orientation program. Subgoal 1: International programs will provide ad-hoc workshops for international students. Subgoal 2: Provide advising in the following areas: cross-cultural adjustment, academic, and Immigration issues. Subgoal 3: Develop a scholarship program for students wanting to study abroad. Subgoal 1: International programs will develop crisis policies and procedures for handling emergencies for both international students and study abroad students. Subgoal 2: Increase study abroad participation from 50 students to at least 65 during the next academic year. Student Development Office Multicultural Affairs: UNIVERSITY GOAL 1: IMPROVE COMMUNICATION Student Affairs Goal: Advocate students’ interests and needs Subgoal 1: Inform students about scholarships, services, events, and other relevant information by e-mail, a regularly updated website, telephone, and hard mail. Subgoal 2: Based on student input, continually evaluate effectiveness and appropriateness of Multicultural Affairs services according to student needs and interests. Subgoal 3: Maintain interaction with other campus departments and serve on campus committees to represent and advocate the needs and interests of students of color, such as scholarship opportunities. UNIVERSITY GOAL 2: INCREASE COLLABORATION Student Affairs Goal: Recruit students and champion retention efforts. Subgoal 1: Review past recruitment efforts and develop a recruitment plan based on previous fruitful contact and density of minority population. The plan will include campus visits, college fair attendance, e-mail, hard mail, and telephone contact. ** Subgoal 2: Increase the number of minority students enrolled in MSU by 5% utilizing updated recruiting literature and posters, and early follow-up through e-mail, hard mail, and telephone calls. Subgoal 3: Develop and implement programs that will improve academic, personal, and coping skills, such "Prepare For College Success" workshops, discussion groups, and networking socials. Subgoal 4: Contact all students of color to review academic progress, determine needs, and advise on support programs, and other resources, available to them. Subgoal 5: Increase participation in special support programs such as Teachers of Color Program and Minnesota Indian Teacher Training Program. Subgoal 1: Review and adapt programming to ensure activities provide opportunities to create awareness and share knowledge. For example, the Pow-wow will be replaced by a series of workshops, lectures, and presentations on Native American culture. Subgoal 2: Engage community members in partnerships with the University, its faculty, and students. Create opportunities for University faculty and students to participate alongside community members in addressing unmet community needs. Subgoal 3: Develop an alumni network to mentor students regarding career choices, service learning, and internships. Subgoal 4: Enlist alumni to write for the service-learning newsletter on personal/career development and their involvement in community service. Subgoal 5: Research community needs and the level of resources available to meet the needs of human service and non-profit agencies in the local community. Subgoal 6: Collaborate with the Housing Department to develop a hall orientation team to increase residence life involvement in orientation. Subgoal 7: Further promote community outreach by serving as faculty advisor to campus service organizations (SPURS and Volunteer Visions). Subgoal 1: The Student Development office will conduct a "mentoring" program that would match faculty interested in starting to use service-learning with faculty who are currently using service-learning in their classes. Subgoal 2: Develop an operations manual outlining the procedures for organizing and coordinating service-learning experiences. ** Subgoal 3: Institutionalize service-learning at Moorhead State University by furthering the University’s efforts to integrate service into curricula across most disciplines, graduate and undergraduate programs. Subgoal 4: Assist faculty in furthering their awareness and understanding of service-learning as a valuable pedagogy. Subgoal 5: Offer on-going support, resources, and professional development opportunities to faculty as they continue to develop their service-learning expertise. Subgoal 6: Form a service-learning advisory board consisting of faculty, staff, students, and community representatives to address key concerns and provide feedback on program initiatives. Subgoal 7: Work with the faculty development committee to present service-learning to academic departments. Sugboal 8: Co-sponsor discipline-specific workshops with Minnesota Campus Compact on service-learning. Student Affairs Goal: Provide quality and responsive student services. Subgoal 1: The Student Development office will produce a service-learning web-page to inform students of the program and to help access forms and procedures. Subgoal 2: Form a "transitions team/committee" to oversee the first-year new-student transition process. ** Subgoal 3: Develop a "new student connection" program that would contact first-time students during their initial months on campus to determine how the University could assist them during this period and to assess their level of satisfaction with the services, etc. of MSU.
