Strategic Planning Focus Group Notes
October 27, 12:00 p.m. Goodman and Johnson
Be More Responsive to Our Environment
Discussion prior to selection of objectives
- More presence in K-12. More
awareness of the current curriculum in schools.
- Links with schools. Bring High
school students to campus for various programs.
- Upgrade equipment and physical
space to meet expectations of incoming students.
Visual appearance of classroom
Chairs in the classroom should be the same color and
style
Repair ceiling tiles
Update carpeting ? some of the carpeting is very old
Entrances to buildings should be cleaner
Bathrooms are dirty
Repair and wash windows
Explore funding to replace GMW's lost in budget
- Responsiveness to out
neighbors. Invite them to a meal on campus to thank them for being good
neighbors to us.
Ask their opinion.
- Many of the above listed items
will cost money. We need to do more private fund raising.
- Hire a fund raiser. Doug
Hamilton does a good job in the area of communication but he cannot do
the fund raising too. St. Cloud State, Mankato State, UND, NDSU,
Concordia all have fund raisers.
- Have a cleanup day once a
month. They don't seem to be proud of their facility so treat it badly.
- Education. More teachers are
returning to add/change licenses. We could do more for this group. Do
more to publicize what we are offering. Assess their needs.
- Improve ties to
business/industry/education/artistic community.
- Develop alternative locations
and means of delivery of courses. This has to be supported and
incentives provided. Offer more workshop courses. Comment-NDSU offers
course for $40.00 per credit. How do we compete when we insist on
charging regular tuition prices?
- Restate Objective #2.
Refocus use of MSU resources
Objectives that were not listed by the strategic
planning committee that should have been included.
- More
interaction/awareness/presence between MSU community and regional K-12
community.
Measurable outcomes of Objective #1
More interaction/awareness/presence between MSU
community and regional
K-12 community.
- More presence in K-12. More
awareness of the current curriculum in schools.
- Links with schools. Bring high
school students to campus for various programs. When high school
students are visiting the planetarium and other university facilities,
give them something to take away (MSU pencil, etc.)
- More teachers are returning to
add/change licenses. Do more for this group. Publicize what is being
offered.
- Improve ties to
business/industry/education/artistic community.
- Develop alternative locations
and means of deliver of courses. Support this activity by providing
incentives. Offer more workshop courses in "topical" areas.
- Deliver workshops via
television on current topics. Learn from competition (University of
Mary, etc.)
Objective #2
Refocus and increase use of MSU's resources to improve
visual appearance in the learning environment.
- Upgrade equipment and physical
space to meet expectations of incoming students.
- Improve visual appearance of
classrooms.
Chairs in the classroom should be the same color and
style
Repair ceiling tiles
Update carpeting
Entrances to buildings should be cleaner
Keep bathrooms clean
Repair and wash windows
- Increase resources by doing
more private fund raising
Hire a fundraiser. (Who has fundraising as his/her
sole duty?)
- Have a cleanup day once per
month. Students will be prouder of their facility so will treat it
better.
Although we did not get to the vote on priorities of
goals, there seemed to be an overwhelming consensus that #2 needs to be a
high priority for MSU |
