Strategic Planning Focus Group Notes

October 25, 3:00 p.m., Group #2, Swenson and Johnson

Be More Responsive to Our Environment

Step #1. Discussion prior to determining two main objectives.

  1. Beautification and Better Maintenance of Campus
    1. More place to put garbage
    2. Better upkeep
    3. More efforts with recycling
    4. Better housekeeping in dorms
    5. The New Center is nonconducive to learning because it is really dirty yet 20% of the Freshmen are enrolled at the New Center. Better attention should be paid to this building.

Use resources we have and fine-tune them. Example: Jamestown College has shown a complete turnaround. Impressions are positive. Returning alums want to see that the campus is maintained.

  1. Involve student in service projects in the community.
  2. Be good neighbors. United Way contributions should be improved. The Moorhead State University community contributes less than both NDSU and Concordia. It creates a negative public relations image. It makes us look miserly. We should create an atmosphere within that prompts facing social needs.
  3. Be more responsive to technological changes. MSU does not have a technological plan. What technology is available? How can we implement new technology on our campus once we determine what is available. We don't seem to know what is available.
  4. Develop better relationships with K-12 teachers.
  5. Bring community to campus by providing more services similar to that provided by SLHS
  6. Take advantage of collaborative arrangements with businesses. Develop greater relationships.
  7. All faculty should have a website.

Other Comments

Ban credit card companies from soliciting on campus.

Lucy Booth is good

Good programs to help students move in have been developed.

Objectives Chosen

Improve use of MSU's resources.

  1. Technology Plan. Faculty share information. Determine available technology
  2. Space Utilization Plan
  3. Develop Replacement Plan for equipment
  4. Develop internet courses ? online courses. Determine what faculty embrace this idea? Some courses adapt well to online; others do not.
  5. Change the reward system to get faculty to develop internet courses and to get maintenance to do better more thorough work.

Presentation of MSU's Campus

  1. Beautification Assess our situation. Where are our problem areas/good areas.

    Solve problem areas.

  2. Improve presentation on the inside and outside.

    Bathrooms are dirty

    Chalkboards are bad

Use the time of maintenance personnel better

  3. Develop a landscape plan

    Follow the plan

  4. Beautification of the campus will lead to more successful recruitment of students. This can be measurable.
  5. Develop ownership of our area.
