FOCUS GROUP SUMMARY

STRATEGIC GOAL: IMPROVE COMMUNICATION
1. Based upon any information you have, how would you
evaluate Moorhead State?s internal and external communication?
- Poor at best. Some said "what communication?"
- There is not enough publicity on the good things people at MSU are
doing although that is progressing slowly.
2. In looking at the objectives for this goal, which are the most
important and why?
- The answer to number 3 on this page was given highest priority. (see
#3 below)
- The original #2 objective, modified slightly, was the next.
Communicate clear goals to all units of the university and assess them.
(Put them on the web page.)
- Combine #1 & #5 of the original objectives to read: "Articulate MSU
vision of who we are and who we want to be and improve marketing".
Why? Without clear, concise communication, the community can only guess
at what we are here for, what we are doing, and why - which is not a good
situation.
3. Are there any objectives that were not listed by the strategic
planning committee which should have been included?
#1 Objective: Centralize the location for gathering and dissemination of
information for both internal & external communications.
a. Formats: publication, web, Department of Communications
b. What: Service & outreach (i.e. Academic Service Learning)
c. Technique: web site clarification of goals
d. Other: voice mail
4. What measurable outcomes should be targeted regarding the objective
given first priority by your group? (centralization of/for information)
- Be sure addresses are correct for alumni
- Set up criteria or programs to track our graduates (perhaps through
the departments) ? where they are, what they are doing. Within reason,
visit them on the job, be a support for them in their transition to the
outside world. Be able to provide a list of former students and places
of employment by location for any representative of MSU who would be
traveling to that location and allow time for contact with the former
students.
- Provide technology for Careers & Placement to set up a web which
could be accessed by hiring entities to peruse files of our seniors in
their field. Seniors would input their information (within guidelines
and limitations provided) in order to be considered for employment.
- Follow-up on internships with the business partner. Was it good, did
it work, why or why not? Will the business be contacted for future
internships?
- Publicize the Student Academic Conference more in the community.
- Publicize the "Expanding Horizons" (women/girls in science) program
in the community.
- Publicize the math testing program we host every third year with
Concordia & NDSU.
- Central communication center needs to also be responsive to
communication FROM the community as well as getting information out to
the community.
- Publicize activities of faculty & staff in their volunteer positions
in the community.
5. What measurable outcomes should be targeted regarding the objective
given second priority by your group? (communication & assessment of goals)
- Put short, concise and clear vision statement and mission statement
on all correspondence from the university.
General Comment for Improvement with the Community
- Improve parking ? parking for visitors not readily available and
giving tickets makes us "user UN-friendly".
