“Increasing Prosocial Behaviors of Students through the Care of a Classroom Cat”
Violent and aggressive acts have become common occurrences in high, middle and elementary schools. Using a classroom cat, students were taught to identify and practice the appropriate prosocial skills and empathy needed to be successful both socially and academically.

“Direct and indirect interventions to improve communicative interactions with persons with dementia”
Changes in communication skills associated with Alzheimer's disease will be discussed. Retained abilities will be highlighted and linked to direct and indirect interventions that may prove helpful in facilitating meaningful communication. Academic service learning and research completed by MSUM graduate students will be shared.

“Can the social sciences contribute solutions to the challenge of food safety?”
This presentation will discuss recent research conducted with food processing workers, food service employees, and home food preparers on the psychology of food safety. Some of the psychological factors to be discussed will include: attitudes and beliefs, motivation, habits, personality, optimistic bias, and normative messages. Several theories will be highlighted along with some practical suggestions for reducing food safety risks.

The body of Great Plains and Canadian prairie fiction is large but, outside of a number of acknowledged classics, not widely known – much like the region itself. This lecture will survey some of the known and some of the unknown works that typify the Plains.

Stories serve multiple functions in a marriage from providing entertainment to offering comfort. Based on data collected from 177 married couples, this presentation will explore the forms of marital stories, the functions of these stories, and the key role of storytelling in relational maintenance.
