Academic
service-learning

www.mnstate.edu/asl
Service-learning is an academic tool
that enriches a student’s education by making relevant connections
between course theory and practice. To assure that a student’s
experience is academic, the Center follows a structured three-step
model that includes planning and preparation, meaningful service,
and structured reflection or evaluation. Interested professors work
with the service learning director to implement a service learning
component within their classroom. Service-learning offers many
benefits including assistance in career exploration and work
experience for the future. Additional information is available by
contacting Student Support Services in OW 206E or call 477.2996.

Established in 1972, the Corrick Center for General Studies,
formerly the New Center for Multidisciplinary Studies, is an
alternative academic entry program for students who do not fully
meet the University's admission standards but otherwise show
potential for collegiate success. The Center's mission--like the
University's mission--is to provide college-level educational
experiences grounded in liberal studies, enabling students to
integrate knowledge, skills and values. Additionally, students at
the Center are encouraged and assisted to identify goals and to
assess their strengths in order to make informed choices about
degrees or other alternatives. The Center provides a special
learning community to facilitate integration into college level
learning and college life. Students will transfer into a major of
their choice once they have demonstrated the ability to succeed.
Students may earn an associate degree in liberal arts (AA) either by
completing the program in the Center or when they have transferred
into their major. Upon completion of an AA, students may also
transfer to another university IN MINNESOTA with general education
requirements accepted as complete.
Students are admitted to the Center based upon a variety of
criteria, including student talent, accomplishments, interests, and
level of motivation. Students will be automatically admitted to the
Center as new entering freshmen provided they have ACT composite
scores of 17 through 20 and a high school rank between 35% and 50%.
Those with this range of ACT and lower high school rank will be
reviewed for admissions. Enrollment in the Center is open to both
traditional and non-traditional students, but is limited
numerically.

Students
who take FYE have higher retention rates and better grades than
students who do not take the course. Former students highly
recommend the course to new entering freshmen. You can register for
FYE 101 under First Year Experience in the semester schedule. For
students registered through the Corrick Center, the comparable
course is MDS 109.

internships
www.mnstate.edu/career/internships/main.html
An internship is a supervised work
experience for which you can earn up to 12 semester credits. The
applied experience gained in an internship is a strong selling point
when you compete for a full-time position. Organizations often hire
interns following a successful experience.
To take an internship for university
credit, you must hold at least junior status and meet with the
Internship Coordinator in the academic department offering your
major.
The Departmental Internship Coordinator is the person who
will assist you in planning an internship experience that will
enhance your professional growth and meet academic expectations.
When you meet with the Internship Coordinator in your major, ask how
internships listed directly with the academic department are
advertised.
To find the name of the Internship
Coordinator in your major, select Internships on the
navigation bar of the MSUM
Career Services web site, and you will find a link titled
Student Internship Resources— click it to get to Departmental
Internship Coordinators; MSUM Internship Policies, Checklist of
Possible Internship Sources, Why Serve an Internship, and Internship
Directories. These directories, which list many internship
opportunities, are available for use in the Resource Center (CMU
114 in the student union).
You also will find current listings of
local, regional and national internships that employers list
directly with MSUM Career Services if you activate a free account in
DragonCareers-click on Register Online at
www.mnstate.edu/career to find directions for uploading
your resume into this web-based system that connects you with
employers seeking interns. If you click on the Internship Listings
link under Internship at
www.mnstate.edu/career, you will
find links to sites that list internships in this region and
throughout the USA.
General questions regarding internships—when and how to apply;
resume/letter preparation; how to pursue leads via your personal
network, at fairs, through use of directories and the Internet—can
be answered by the Internship Coordinator in Career Services. Call
218.477.2131 to make an appointment with the campus Internship Coordinator.

MSUM belongs to a cooperative arrangement with Concordia College
(Moorhead) and North Dakota State University (Fargo) through which
students may take courses at the other colleges without paying any
additional tuition or fees. At Concordia, an MSUM student may take
one course per term if that course is not offered at MSUM. At NDSU
students may take as many courses each term as needed to satisfy
covered programs or courses not offered at MSUM.
Tri-College also offers regular bus service among the three
campuses as well as reciprocal parking privileges. A comprehensive
cooperative arrangement among the libraries gives students and
faculty direct access to the resources of all three libraries. The
Tri-College University also sponsors a Center for Environmental
Studies and an Economic Education Center.
