An internship is a required capstone experience to receive a BSW degree. The Social Work Department collaborates with students and field supervisors to provide this integral part of a student’s education—the application of social work knowledge and skills to real practice in the field. Internships reinforce a commitment to professional ethics and values through a dynamic learning experience. Field instructors represent nearly 200 agencies in a 250-mile radius. They reinforce the purposes, values, and ethics of the profession; integrate practice-based knowledge; and promote professional competence. Formal and informal evaluations help students to integrate and apply the program’s 10 competencies and improve areas needing further development. The capstone experience equips social work graduates to successfully pass licensing exams. Over the past four years, School of Social Work graduates have averaged a pass rate of 90.5% for the bachelor’s examination, while the national average is 78%.
