The Economics Society is an organization that welcomes MSUM students with an interest in the field of economics. Approximately half of MSUM Economics majors attend the organization's biweekly meetings and events. The purpose of the Economics Society is to foster friendships, develop leadership skills, encourage professional development, engage in community service projects, and of course, have fun!Among many activities, Economics Society members look forward to attending the annual Winter Institute Business and Economic Leadership Summit in St. Cloud, Minnesota, to learn from and interact with nationally recognized economists. Invited presenters include leading economic strategists and global thinkers, who offer insights related to national and international economic issues. Past conferences have featured a variety of prominent economists including James Heckman, 2000 Nobel Prize Winner in Economics, and Federal Reserve Bank Presidents. During research seminars and panel discussions, students are active participants in the economic discourse focused on economic growth, employment and inflation. More than 20 MSUM students annually attend this conference, which is supported by student activity fees and department alumni donations. The Economics Society assists the department in sponsoring alumni speakers, such as Jeff Dewitt, Finance Manager with Microsoft in Redmond, Washington. Economics Society members also enjoy a variety of social activities such as curling, bowling, and participating in MSUM’s homecoming parade.
