The Chemistry and Biochemistry Club (CBC) promotes chemistry to the university and surrounding community by participating in outreach activities to teach chemistry principles and generate an interest in science among students, teachers and the community. Outreach activities strengthen club members’ understanding of chemistry concepts and help them develop teaching and presentation skills by demonstrating fun and engaging experiments to the area’s youth. Students with majors in Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Chemistry or Bioscience are encouraged to join CBC, which is affiliated with the national American Chemical Society. In recent years students have presented research at national meetings in Boston, Miami, Dallas and San Francisco as part of their educational program. Club members also volunteer in the community, including participating in the Relay for Life, volunteering at the local homeless shelter and conducting other service projects. The Chemistry Department’s close, collegial atmosphere extends to the CBC, which fosters friendships, develops leadership skills and encourages professional development.
