Service Learning Projects

Service Learning projects give students the opportunity to make relevant, meaningful connections between classroom instruction and real-life situations. This enriching component is offered in 30 percent of Communication Studies courses. Projects are assigned to coincide with students’ passions and are integrated into the students’ academic curriculum. Students apply knowledge and skills acquired in class to help design, plan, market, implement and assess their unique projects. Students are able to use critical thinking and planning to help address genuine community needs.

Service Learning projects help to provide:

• Academic, social, and personal development of students
• Development of a professional network
• Resume building activities
• A broader understanding of community issues and the importance of involvement in these activities

Recent Service Learning projects that students have participated in:

• Fundraiser to help defray medical costs and living expenses of a cancer victim
• Poster campaign that helped raise awareness of suicide risks among college students
• Promotional efforts that increased awareness of the Veteran’s Club on MSUM campus
• Sustainability awareness campaign that encouraged MSUM students to be conscientious of environmental effects of daily living
• Walk A Mile in Her Shoes event raised awareness for the Rape and Abuse Crisis Center and helped to spread important safety messages. Approximately 150 men and women walked in heels to raise money for the center. This event won a regional award.
• The Share Your Soles event raised shoe donations to be sent to a third world country
• Fashion show of gently used prom dresses provided high school girls the opportunity to afford to attend their school’s prom. This project was in collaboration with David’s Bridal, Men’s Warehouse and Mary Kay.
