    Program Description

    The Master of Science in Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences is a professional degree. It is the entry-level clinical degree in the field of Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences. Students completing this program are qualified for clinical positions in communication disorders throughout the nation. The graduate program at Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM) is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Candidates for the master’s degree fulfill academic and clinical requirements established by ASHA for the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC). The master’s degree program requires five semesters of study.

    Key Features of the Program

    -Accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).

    -Classes on timely topics such as Augmentative/Alternative Communication, Social and Cognitive Correlates of Speech and Language Disorders, Aging and Dementia, Dysphagia across the lifespan, and Adolescent Language Disorders.

    -Extensive computer-based clinical and research instrumentation for speech and voice analysis, audiology, and augmentative communication.

    -Students volunteer for speech, hearing, language and memory screenings, stuttering support group; present at regional and national conferences; gain insight into the speech-language pathology profession.

    -Extremely high job placement.

    -Wonderful faculty-student interaction.

    -Our students have high success rates at the PRAXIS examination (required for ASHA).

    -A wide variety of off-campus practica and internships are available in medical, school, private, and other settings (over 33 excellent clinical practicum affiliations).

    Specialty Clinics

    Auditory Processing Clinic

    -Assesses and treats individuals with auditory and language processing disorders.

    Regional Assistive Technology Center (RATC)

    -Provides assessment and rehabilitation options for individuals with severe expressive communication disorders who are unable to use oral speech.

    -Provides communication devices and knowledge of augmentative communication systems.

    Voice and General Evaluation Pools

     

    Admission Requirements

    The following is a checklist of materials the applicant will submit to Graduate Studies and /or via the centralized online application system.

    1. Baccalaureate degree in Speech/Language/Hearing Sciences or Communication Disorders from a regionally accredited institution.
    2. Completed Application for Admission to Graduate Study form.
    3. Completed Speech Language Hearing Sciences Departmental Application for Graduate Study Form
    4. Letters of Recommendation(3 required)
    5. Non-refundable $20.00 fee to Graduate Studies for first-time applicants to Minnesota State University Moorhead.
    6. Official transcripts from ALL colleges and universities attended.  
    7. 3.0 cumulative GPA
    8. Graduate Record Exam (GRE). Only official scores are accepted; new version of the GRE requested.

    Degree Requirements

    • Minimum of 53 credits, including required courses, elective courses, a research experience (thesis or portfolio)
    • Students who wish to transfer credits from other institutions or have taken courses before admission to the graduate program should refer to the "Residence and Transfer of Credit" section in the Graduate Bulletin for further information.
    • Comprehensive examination based on ASHA certification examination (PRAXIS).
    • Plan A Thesis or Plan B Portfolio
    • Oral Examination
    • 3.0 grade point average

    Students will need to earn 28-29 SLP credits depending upon whether they have selected SLP 696 or SLP 699. All students are required to earn at least 53 credits to complete the degree.
